THE COMPOUND GIN

ABLEFORTH’S BATHTUB GIN

ABV: 43.3%

Origin: England

Unlike some compound gins, Ableforth’s distil their gin first with botanicals in a copper pot still before taking a portion of the distillate, compounding it with a further six botanicals and then blending it back into the original distillate. A long old process, you might think. But it’s one that gives Ableforth’s the edge over some other ‘bathtub’ or compound gins out there.

The distinctive bottles wrapped in their brown paper, string and black wax further give this gin a faux rough-and-ready look that the sophisticated contents belie. The colour of the gin itself is pale straw, as you would expect from a compound gin.

The Botanicals (infused): Juniper, coriander, cassia bark, clove, cardamom, orange peel

TASTING NOTES:

The nose is warm, spicy, citrusy juniper.

A smooth dry gin. The cardamom, clove and cassia all add a spicy, earthy depth without any one of the three pushing to the fore.

Premium Indian tonic and a wedge of orange, with a twist of orange zest to add further depth to the orangyness is a good serve for this gin.
